Event: Potion Collective Presents A Quasi-Formal Engagement Saturday March 30th at BFP

image

The Potion Collective evolved from a group of artists and musicians that frequented the former “AKA Potion Café” on Mckibbin St. in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The weekly Monday open mic was the culmination of the group’s energy and talent; a space dedicated solely to creative expression, growth, and collaboration. After the closing of the café, the group had to find a new means to gather and support one another, so went on to officially found The Potion Collective in early 2010. Since then, The Collective has been active in organizing various arts events and musical performances in the greater Bushwick area, as a means to showcase the varied talents of its members. The open mic has been bouncing around for the past few years. It’s been held everywhere from basements and bars to lofts and cafes- and every other DIY space imaginable- but the core ideals, talent, and enthusiasm of the original group remain intact. Now, more than 3 years after the café closed, we are overjoyed to be settling down again in a new home: Brooklyn Fire Proof East. We look forward to seeing you on Monday.

“The Potion Collective is an evolving, diverse community of musicians and artists based in Bushwick, Brooklyn, whose mission is to support and nurture the arts by creating outlets for artists and enthusiasts [across all mediums] to develop, produce and promote their art.” -Original Potion Mission Statement, circa 2010

Exhibition: “Single And Looking” Tuesday, March 12 – Thursday, March 14

ArtHelix, in association with Brooklyn Fire Proof, is pleased to announce its new exhibition,

Single and Looking, March 12-18, 2013.

Curated by Wilson Duggan, Single and Looking was organized using online dating sites to find single gay, straight, and bisexual men and women in Brooklyn who self-identify as artists on their dating profiles. Of the dozens of people invited to apply, the 8 artists selected for the show represent a wide range of artistic practices and styles. At the closing party for the show, Saturday, March 16th, the artists will be available for speed-dating with the audience; all of the artwork on view will be up for sale in a silent auction format, as will dates with the artists themselves.

Investment in a work of art is often in reality an investment in the artwork’s creator. By exhib- iting these artworks alongside the artist’s themselves, Single and Looking hopes to explore this blurred line between the social and commercial aspects of art, dating, and the market- place.

The exhibition will be on view at Brooklyn Fire Proof East Tuesday, March 12 – Thursday, March 14.

The exhibition will then move to ArtHelix Gallery Friday, March 15 – Monday, March 18. Closing Art and Date Auction: Saturday, March 16th, 6PM - Midnight.

For additional information, please contact Wilson Duggan: wilson.arthelix@gmail.com

Event: Bushwick Food Coop Presents a Screening of “In Organic We Trust”

We can no longer stomach our food system. It’s killing more and more Americans and costing billions in health care. 78% of Americans eat some organic food because they think it’s healthier. But is it really the solution or just a marketing scam?

When “organic” became a brand, everything changed. Small local farmers couldn’t keep up with demand and big corporations went into the business. The philosophy and the label grew apart. But guess what? “Certified organic” is not the answer.

This film looks beyond organic for practical solutions for me and you. Local farmer’s markets, school gardens, and urban farming can reconnect us with our food and transform how we eat. Grow a tomato on your balcony, join a CSA, and support healthier school lunches for kids.

Dedicated activists, chefs, and local farmers are building a truly sustainable future for all of us. Get involved. Eat different.

Event // Playground Detroit Presents: Solid Dudes Kitchen

image

Brooklyn Fireproof is proud to present PLAYGROUND DETROIT a non-profit creative platform whose mission is to connect contemporary artists who represent Detroit’s young talent in the visual art and music scene with exposure and collaboration opportunities in New York City.

DISCLAIMER: This cooking show is NOT for your average Martha Stewart fan. Birthed in 2007, by Detroit-based bassist Derek Swanson from Heads Will Roll and drummer Dave Graw, Solid Dudes Kitchen‘s wild antics have acquired a following all their own. Equipped with their witty conversational chemistry, love of food, and their own raunchy style, the duo started a collaboration for a short cooking mini-series filmed out of Derek’s apartment. Neither gentlemen have an official culinary background- but with over 38,000 YouTube views and thousands of dedicated fans- this duo’s internet credibility isn’t lacking. Each web episode they serve up an interesting recipe for dishes like pot brownies, macaroni and cheese, and now…Sausage Party.

You are cordially invited to the premiere party of their latest episode, Sausage Party at Brooklyn Fireproof presented by PLAYGROUND DETROIT. There will be DJ sets by Dial.81, Composer of DETROPIA, Sundance Film Festival winner and Oscar-short listed documentary.

FREE ADMISSION with RSVP.

MORE ABOUT PLAYGROUND DETROIT:

PLAYGROUND DETROIT is a fiscally sponsored organization through the support of Fractured Atlas. Fractured Atlas is a non-profit organization that serves a national community of artists and arts organizations. They help artists and arts organizations function more effectively as businesses by providing access to funding, healthcare, education, and more, all in a context that honors their individuality and independent spirit. By nurturing today’s talented but underrepresented voices, they hope to foster a dynamic and diverse cultural landscape of tomorrow. You can find our profile and donation page on the Fractured Atlas website HERE.
PLAYGROUND DETROIT provides an ongoing visual art and music series that bridges the creative communities of Detroit and New York City.  This gives artists and musicians from both cities an opportunity to exchange ideas and dialogue about future roles their cities will hold in the art world. Our event format varies depending on the content, which includes film screenings, art exhibits, music shows, and collaborative efforts with other groups to expose those outside of Detroit to local talent.
